Fugs Film! Offbeat Documentary Screens at Rivertown Film
April 2026–A real slice of downtown New York history, the time capsule of a documentary
“Fugs Film! “will bring viewers back to the Lower East Side circa 1964 when Rivertown Film
presents it at the Nyack Center (South Broadway at Depew Ave., entrance on South Broadway).
On Wednesday, April 22 nd .
The Fugs were poet musicians who nurtured their time. They used musical satire to explore
boundaries of free speech and to bait “the Establishment”. Their influence can be seen on other
musical groups from The Mothers of Invention to Country Joe and the Fish. Founded by Ed
Saunders, a well-known ‘60’s counter-culture figure and the proprietor of Peace Eye Bookstore
in the East Village, poet Tuli Kupferberg and drummer Ken Weaver, the Fugs blended a folk
philosophy with rock and roll and sound collage. They tapped into a wildly specific time and
place that resonates today. Be warned: they were called “the filthiest and most vulgar thing a
human mind could possibly conceive” by a music executive in 1969.
There will be a post film discussion with the Director, Chuck Smith, and Co-Producer Myles
Aronowitz moderated by Kristi Zea. The Community Partner for the evening is Main Street Beat.
Doors to the Nyack Center open at 7:30pm, and the film begins at 8pm. Tickets are $13/General
Admission, $11/Students & Seniors, and $9/Rivertown Film Members More information can be
found at rivertownfilm.org.
