Rivertown Film Benefit Features A Film Preview & Musical Program
June 2026 – A benefit celebration of both legendary artist Woody Guthrie and America’s 250th Birthday makes perfect sense.
On Monday, June 15th, Rivertown Film will unveil its newly established Cash Reserve Fund. Every dollar earned will be matched by a gift from former Rivertown Film board members Barrie Peterson and Bea Conner-Peterson. To mark the occasion, Rivertown is presenting a preview of excerpts from Rockland resident Greg Mitchell’s new documentary, “Woody Guthrie and the Ghost of Tom Joad” at The Nyack Center (58 Depew Ave., Nyack). The film is narrated by singer-musician Roseanne Cash and includes a specially written song by Bruce Springsteen. It airs later this summer on PBS. Rounding out the evening will be a short film, “Woody and Me” featuring tributes by Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Bruce Sprinsteen, Mavis Staples and others.
Mitchell will lead a post film discussion with Guthrie’s granddaughter, Anna Canoni, the president of Woody Guthrie Publications and Dan Wolff, the author of “Grown Up Anger: The Connected Mysteries of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie and the Calumet Massacre of 1913”.
Music was, obviously, crucial to Guthrie’s life, and the night concludes with performances by Tom Chapin, The Chapin Sisters, and the All Together Now Chorus. A community sing-out of “This Land Is Your Land” will be a rollicking close to the night.
Tickets to the Benefit are $15; on June 15th, they’re $20. Doors open at 7:30pm.
