FREE! Community Program

Join Skyla Schreter Dance at Bethany Arts Community for a presentation showcasing the creative process of their newest project “Our Wounds, Our Power.” Choreographer Skyla Schreter will lead the company dancers through a live demonstration of the various artistic influences that form the foundation of the project’s source inspiration. Showcasing excerpts of the new choreography created while in residence at BAC, the presentation will illustrate how the particular artistic inspirations for the project – encompassing poetry, painting, costuming and music – come to life in the creation of the choreography.

About “Our Wounds, Our Power”
Pulling inspiration from feminist pioneers across artistic disciplines and scientific fields, “Our Wounds, Our Power’‘ examines healing as a continuum that is in constant flux, rather than an end result that can be achieved.

In their residency at BAC, Skyla Schreter Dance will experiment with forming a collective identity that traverses through various psychological, sensational and emotional stages of healing, particularly related to their experiences as womxn; investigating and interweaving the transitory nature of a cyclical process that is ever-evolving.

Choreography for “Our Wounds, Our Power” will be created by Skyla Schreter, in collaboration with the dancers of Skyla Schreter Dance. “Our Wounds, Our Power” references, quotes and integrates artistic work from Mira Calix, Adrienne Rich, Michelle Silver and Lauren Carmen. This residency is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Award – Choreography Commission.
