Walk Safe Irvington Pedestrian Safety Campaign

As part of its ongoing pedestrian safety campaign, Traffic Calming Irvington is sponsoring its second annual public service announcement video contest. Students in the 6th to 12th grades are invited to create a short PSA video (60 seconds max) on “Crosswalk Safety – Stop, Look, Wave” or “Nighttime Visibility.”

“Stop-Look-Wave” is a traffic safety approach suggested by the Irvington Police Department to address the difficulty of crossing Irvington’s busy Main Street, where diagonal parking and other factors limit visibility. It stresses the importance of establishing eye contact between drivers and pedestrians and of clearly signaling one’s intentions before crossing. The committee also hopes some of the videos will promote pedestrian safety by reminding residents to make themselves more visible when walking at night. This can easily be done by wearing light clothing, carrying a flashlight, or wearing/carrying something reflective such as the arm bands that are available for free at Irvington Village Hall, Police Department, and Recreation Center.

The winners will be announced and cash prizes awarded on Sunday, June 18th, at Village Hall where the videos will be screened as part of Celebrate Irvington Day. Cash prizes are to be awarded and the winning videos will be seen on Facebook, on the Village Cablevision/FIOS channels, and at public locations around the Village.

Entries will be accepted through Monday, June 5th.

Details and an entry form are available on the SlowDown Irvington Facebook page or can be requested from SlowDownIrvington@gmail.com.
