Sitting on the porch of my home on the Hudson, the Shattemuc Yacht Club, I experienced yet another exquisite sunset. I wondered how different (if at all) the view might have appeared to Henry Hudson in 1609 when he ventured up the river, the first European to do so. He sailed into our area, which ultimately was named after him.
Looking north from the veranda, Teller’s Point—named after a distant relative of the Van Cortlandt family—comes into view. It was here, in 1780, that a pivotal moment in the Revolutionary War occurred. The British sloop of war Vulture was fired upon by local militia, forcing the crew to abandon their most important passenger, Major John André. André was then compelled to return to British lines on foot, carrying plans for West Point in his boot. He was subsequently captured and hanged as a spy. His fate sealed Benedict Arnold’s legacy as the most infamous traitor in American history.
Also integral to the history of the Hudson River is the Shattemuc Yacht Club in Ossining. The term “yacht club” belies the informal and welcoming nature of this community, where people have gathered for over 160 years. Shattemuc Yacht Club’s roots can be traced to the old Sing Sing Yacht Club, which held its first regatta in 1858, over 166 years ago! The clubhouse, kitchen, bar, and barbecue are open to members year-round, hosting holiday gatherings and Friday night TGIF traditions. The club is also a favorite stopover for transient boaters traveling up and down the Hudson.
The well-protected marina boasts 120 slips for sloops up to 48 feet, along with a beach for kayak and small boat launching. An Olympic-style swimming pool with a snack bar and an on-site restaurant further enhance the club’s offerings. For junior members, aged 9 to 16, the Sailing Academy provides boating safety and basic sailing instruction in two summer sessions beginning in July. It has always been our philosophy to promote sailing.

Once a year, for the past 140 years, sailors from Kingston to Nyack gather for a weekend of competition in the Shattemuc Open Regatta. For the novice sailor, the Pedlow Cup Series provides an opportunity to gain experience, pairing less experienced sailors with seasoned crews and captains. More importantly, if you simply wish to experience a sunset on the water, one of our many boaters would gladly welcome you aboard. As I said before, it has become my home on the Hudson.
