Peekskill native Chrystel Flores was named a finalist for the inaugural New York Road Runners (NYRR) Miles of Impact Award, presented by Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS). Although the award was won by Julia Azcona of Queens, who receives a complimentary entry into the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon in November, Chrystel also will compete in that race, for the third time. She continues on her Seven Star journey (competing in the world’s seven elite marathons) and also will be running the Chicago Marathon in October. The other Seven Star races are in Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin.
Chrystel exemplifies resilience and passion, turning personal tragedy into a powerful journey of healing and leadership. After the devastating loss of her husband, she sought strength through running—completing multiple NYRR half marathons and marathons. Her unwavering commitment to herself, her two children, and her community has inspired those around her.
As co-leader of the Rising NYRR program at her middle school (in Pelham Gardens, the Bronx), Chrystel creates a safe, encouraging environment where young runners build confidence, character, and a love for the sport. Her leadership extends beyond the track, as she uplifts her community through positivity and connection—whether through run clubs, volunteering, or race-day support.
Chrystel’s story is one of perseverance, showing how running can empower individuals in the face of adversity. Her consistent presence and compassionate leadership continue to inspire others to meet challenges.
The New York Road Runners (NYRR) Miles of Impact Award Presented by Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) celebrates dedicated runners who embody the core values of HSS and NYRR—community spirit, diversity, excellence, gratitude, innovation, integrity, passion, and teamwork. This award seeks to recognize runners who go the extra mile— not just in their training, but in their resilience, passion, and impact on the running community. Whether they inspire others, overcome challenges with unwavering determination, or demonstrate an exceptional love for the sport, we want to honor them.
Each of the five finalists receives a NYRR membership–branded item and certificate, a full New Balance training set, and recognition during NYRR Grete’s Great Gallop 10K festival, on August 23. The grand prize winner received a special NYRR Miles of Impact Award trophy presented by HSS, a 2025 TCS New York City Marathon complimentary guaranteed entry (if runner is currently signed up for TCSNYCM, entry will be transferred to winner’s mentor), HSS Running Mechanics Analysis, and a one-year NYRR x Runna training membership.
