Regeneron Scientist Named First Big Deal Recipient by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Westchester & Putnam

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Westchester & Putnam (BBBSWP) is launching The Big Deal initiative, to recognize the invaluable contributions of their Bigs (mentors). This campaign highlights the inspiring stories of those who make BBBSWP thrive. The initiative begins this month in conjunction with NationalMentoring Month.  The first Big to be featured is Dr. Kaniel Cassady, a Tarrytown resident and scientist at Regeneron.  Dr. Cassady has been a dedicated mentor to his Little, D.R. for five years and serves on the BBBSWP board.

The Big Deal initiative celebrates mentoring by spotlighting a Big from Westchester or Putnam County monthly, allowing them to share their experiences to inspire others to become mentors. “We are so proud of our Bigs,” said Ann Ellsworth, CEO of BBBSWP. “They are the heart and soul of our organization, and we are profoundly grateful for their unwavering commitment to their Littles and to BBBSWP. The Big/Little relationship is a remarkable journey for both individuals. In today’s world, where so much of our time is consumed by endless streams of digital content, this experience stands out as something truly special- it’s in-person and it centers on sharing activities, meaningful conversations and building connections.”

Dr. Cassady says that his interest in mentoring was sparked when he was in graduate school. “I had a mentor who spoke fondly of his experience as a Big Brother. Those conversations, combined with the mentorships I’ve benefited from in my life, made me want to pay it forward. I was paired with my Little Brother, D.R., in 2019 soon after starting at Regeneron and we’re still a pair today.  Like many of us, my world is insulated from many in the community who are facing adversity every day. But the reality is, these children and families are in our communities- even here in Westchester County. As a data-driven scientist, I can’t ignore the statistics associated with the outcomes of children facing challenges such as the foster care system, homelessness, or gaps in education. Our relationship has opened my eyes to what it means to be a true advocate by introducing possibilities that they don’t know existed.  BBBSWP has been a fantastic way to help the next generation, and personally, has been one of the most rewarding and meaningful experiences of my life.”

Dr. Cassady recalled that when they first met, D.R. was in eighth grade, and their conversations revolved around Marvel movies. Today, almost five years later, those conversations have evolved to topics like college applications and career aspirations. The pair enjoy activities including hiking, bowling and eating a lot of pizza.  Lately, Dr. Cassady is teaching D.R. how to drive and introducing him to the value of volunteerism. Together, they give back to the community by assembling Thanksgiving baskets for families in need through Regeneron. The duo also shared firsts- their first NFL game and Comic-Con.

The 2023 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Westchester and Putnam Impact Report reflects the significant positive impact on a mentor’s relationship with their Little:

  • 93% less likely to engage in substance abuse
  • 99 % are promoted to the next grade
  • 100% go on to college, vocational school or a paying job
  • 97% feel more confident problem solving with help from their mentors.
