The City of Peekskill is pleased to celebrate the installation of new wayfinding signs throughout the downtown. These custom signs, designed by ACSM, Inc., in collaboration with Peekskill community members, will improve navigation for residents and visitors, boost local economic development, and enhance the city’s overall identity and experience. This project, funded through the New York Department of State’s $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) award, will create a sense of a district throughout the downtown, increase storefront and property values, and will have a design motif that references Peekskill’s historic ties to rail transit and its distinct art-deco inspired buildings.“We are excited for the installation of the wayfinding signage throughout the downtown,” said Mayor Vivian McKenzie. “The wayfinding signage will enhance the visitor experience in Peekskill’s downtown, grow tourism, and encourage visitors to explore our wonderful downtown and discover the hidden gems that make Peekskill unique.”
“The City of Peekskill is grateful for New York State’s support for this vital program that will elevate the entire city be enhancing the downtown,” said City Manager Matt Alexander.
The wayfinding signage program will consist of parking directional and identification signage, pedestrian wayfinding signs, single destination signs, and informational kiosks. The kiosks will include an original map featuring illustrations of Peekskill landmarks by local artist Fox Burrow Designs. The kiosks will also introduce visitors to the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce, Business Improvement District, Peekskill Arts Council, and resources for hiking and transit. As Peekskill adapts to the increased numbers of cyclists and electric bike and scooter riders, the kiosks will also identify the safest and flattest routes for non-motorized transit.“The professionally-designed wayfinding signage is going to guide visitors and tourists into and around downtown with ease,” said Bill Powers, Executive Director, Peekskill BID. “Whether walking around or driving through the city, we hope this highly visible project will elevate Peekskill as a place to discover unmatched history, art, dining, music and shopping.”
The wayfinding signage program has been fully funded through the New York State Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI), a program of the New York Department of State. Since winning this award in 2019 and obtaining funding in 2022, Peekskill has undertaken renovations to historic Fleischmann Pier, Pugsley Park, and Monument Park, bringing thousands of new visitors to the city, which supports local tourism and businesses. Installation of the wayfinding signage will be completed by October 31, 2025.
Wayfinding signage is an essential, though sometimes forgotten, ingredient in the recipe for a vibrant, accessible downtown,” said New York Secretary of State Walter T. Mosley. “These signs complement the City’s branding and marketing efforts, also funded by the DRI, and further establish Peekskill as an exciting and diverse destination for residents, businesses and tourists alike. We congratulate Peekskill on completing yet another piece of the ongoing revitalization process.”
