Bronx River Parkway Reservation to Celebrate 100 Years

The Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Bronx River Parkway Reservation with a special celebration on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event will be held in the West Parking Lot of the Westchester County Center in White Plains, taking place alongside Bicycle Sundays, the Reservation’s long-standing, cherished event.

As Westchester’s oldest park, the 807-acre Bronx River Parkway Reservation is rich in history. Created as part of the 13.2-mile Parkway – the first of its kind in the nation – the Reservation set the stage for a century of innovation in parkland and community recreation.

Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “The Reservation holds a special place in Westchester’s history as our first linear park and among the first in the United States. This centennial is a chance to honor the visionaries who created it and to celebrate the generations of residents who continue to make it such a vibrant destination. Hosting this milestone during Bicycle Sunday underscores how the Bronx River Parkway Reservation continues to bring people together in healthy and sustainable ways, just as it has for the past century.”

Commissioner of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation Kathy O’Connor said: “The Bronx River Parkway Reservation isn’t just a park. It’s part of Westchester’s story. For 100 years, families, cyclists and nature lovers have enjoyed this unique green space. We honor its legacy while looking forward to its next century of recreation and community.”

The day’s festivities will kick off with a story from Master Storyteller, Jonathan Kruk about Indigenous, Colonial and Revolutionary times of the Bronx and Hudson Rivers, and include a scavenger hunt, displays, a reading of Little Honk by Westchester Parks’ historian Gigi Carnes, a showcase of classic cars, capped off with a celebratory motorcade. Food will be available for purchase.

Free parking will be available in the County Center’s East Lot.

Westchester County Center is at 198 Central Ave. in White Plains.
