In 2024, Briarcliff Manor welcomed a new home décor store to the village. The minute you step through the doors of Saltbox Sash on Pleasantville Road you sense a difference between what it offers and what you might find at a “big box” décor store.

River Journal caught up with owner Diana Salvati to find out more about her store and her vision.

River Journal: When did you start your business and why?

Diana Salvati: In 2017, I turned my passion for home decor into a business with a mission: to help people create spaces they love while supporting artisans in underserved communities.

At a craft show, I discovered fair trade products and was inspired to learn more. I found that fair trade is a global movement focused on transparency, equality, and sustainability. It ensures artisans are paid fairly, work in safe environments, and use sustainable materials and traditional techniques.

This inspired me to curate fair trade, ethically sourced, home decor from over 25 countries. By partnering with fair trade organizations and non-profits, we bring unique, sustainable pieces to homes while empowering artisans worldwide

RJ: What services and products do you offer?

DS: We curate sustainable, one-of-a-kind pieces that transform homes while supporting artisans across the globe. Each item we offer is crafted by skilled artisans using time-honored techniques, and by purchasing these products, our customers help preserve cultural traditions and contribute to building stronger, more resilient communities.

RJ: What is unique about your company?

DS: We don’t carry mass-produced items — every piece in our collection is unique, telling a story of creativity, culture, and craftsmanship. By supporting these products, we help uplift artisans and their families, contributing to the prosperity of entire communities. Through our commitment to fair trade, we promote a sustainable, ethical approach to business that honors people, the planet, and the preservation of cultural traditions.
