This year marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center that took the lives of 111 Westchester County residents and 12 former residents, as well as those who later died of 9/11-related illnesses.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins called 9/11 “a day that forever changed our county, and our nation.”
Jenkins added: “Behind every name is a life, a family, and a story that was never the same. We gather not only to honor those we lost, but to hold close the memories they left behind and to recognize the courage and sacrifice of all those who answered the call in the days and years that followed.”
The solemn anniversary will be observed with memorial commemorations across the county including the River Town communities.
- The County of Westchester is holding two days of reflection, both at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla:
- An Interfaith Prayer Vigil at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at the Rising & 9/11 First Responders Memorial will include leaders from Christian, Jewish, Hindu and Muslim communities. Prayers will be followed by candle lighting and a wreath-laying ceremony at the steel beam from the Twin Towers.
- A memorial service on Friday, Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Kensico Dam plaza will include remarks, music and reading of the names of all who are memorialized.
- Both the Interfaith Prayer Vigil and the September 11 Memorial Service will be streamed live on Facebook and on the Westchester County Homepage.

- The annual Ossining and Briarcliff Manor Remembrance Ceremony takes place at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at Louis Engel Waterfront Park, 25 Westerly Road, Ossining. The ceremony will include elected officials and emergency service organizations from the Village of Ossining, Town of Ossining, and Village of Briarcliff Manor.
- The joint ceremony being held by Village of Buchanan, Town of Cortlandt, and Village of Croton-on-Hudson will take place at 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, at the “Reaching Through the Shadow” Memorial at Croton Landing Park, 1 Van Wyck St. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at Harmon Firehouse, 30 Wayne St. in Croton.
- The City of Peekskill Fire Department’s ceremony will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, at the Memorial Gardens, located at the Riverfront Green.
- The Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown Volunteer Fire Departments’ joint ceremony will be at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6, at Patriots Park in Tarrytown.
- The Village of Irvington will hold its ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Friday. Sept. 11, in Scenic Hudson Park, 29 Bridge St.
- Yorktown will hold its annual commemoration at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the Shrub Oak 9/11 Memorial, 1130 E. Main St., Shrub Oak (Next to the Hart library). Elected officials, clergy, veterans’ groups, and members of the public will participate. Five Yorktown residents died in the terror attacks on the World Trade Center.
