Hackley Hornets Win Barcelona Cup

This summer the Hackley Girls Soccer team improved their record to 41-0 after outscoring teams 21-2 at the Barcelona Cup in Spain. The Hornets went 5-0 in the European tournament which started with their trip to Paris.

imagesThey were able to train on local fields, sightsee, scrimmage local boys teams and win. They then set off to Narbonne in the south of France. The highlight of Narbonne was a scrimmage with a local team followed by a barbeque. Local press attended and the mayor of the town was there. The girls exchanged gifts and e-mails.

They then headed to Barcelona. After the opening ceremonies the team’s first match was against Saudi Arabia. It was a close game but the Hornets prevailed 2-1.They continued their winning streak and ended up in the finals with a very physical Spanish team. Four yellow cards were handed out to the Spanish team because of their harsh play but the Hornets came together and rose above the tension. Sarah Walmsley led the scoring with ten goals. Returning players Morgan Sackman, Catilina Friscia and Liz Bendick were dynamic in the tournament. Goalie Jocelyn Remmert only let one goal in during regular play. The other goal was scored off a penalty kick. The Hornets were coached by John Gillard and Melissa Abraham and managed by Sandy Sackman. The trophy the team brought home was so big the hotel had to specially wrap it.
