The Best Birdhouses in Westchester

Back in April the Tarrytown Beautification Foundation announced a unique contest. It was the kind of contest that the whole village could get behind and embrace as their own.

imagesMany of you (including the Chairman of the Foundation, I must add) thought we were NUTS! Perhaps we were, but one thing is for sure — we have created a Village-wide event that is sure to be repeated for many years to come.

I am, of course, referring to the Bird House Building Contest. To our amazement we watched Village residents compete against each other in a fun and exciting atmosphere. Former Trustees competed against Merchants, kids in day care against kids in day care, Ambulance Corps members against other Corps members, and friends against friends. All in all, at the end of the day, we had an astounding 71 bird houses to admire and enjoy.

Some of them are still being exhibited in store fronts on Main Street.

Just when we thought it could not have been better, we received a great surprise. Former TVAC Captain Alaric Young graciously donated his bird house to the Foundation to raffle off. This was not a menial donation by any stretch, because Alaric’s bird house (one of only 4 "extreme" bird houses in the contest) is truly a work of art that will go down in Tarrytown history! "The Tarrytown Music Hall Bird House" took approximately 200 hours to create. Alaric, and his wife, Elena, painstakingly worked to get as many of the details as possible, creating a masterpiece that any bird would love to call its home!

Here is a chance to own your very own "mini" Music Hall! The foundation is selling raffle tickets until July 6, and one lucky person will get to take this masterpiece home with them. The tickets are $ 5.00 each and can be purchased at Michael Christopher, Whimsies, Chiboust and at some of the evening performances at the Music Hall. Proceeds from this raffle will go to the Tarrytown Beautification Foundation and the Tarrytown Music Hall.

The Foundation would like to thank Alaric and Elena Young for this most generous gift and to every one who participated in the event. We can’t wait to see what will be built next year!
