Read to Me

In his reading debut with many of the Village’s young people at the Community Opportunity Center, Mayor Fixell passed muster with K-3rd Grade students.

imagesHe read aloud several imaginative and amusing books aimed at that age group. The mayor attended the April 1st inauguration of the Center’s new "Come Read With Us" program where each month a member of the local community will read to the K-3rd grade in an effort to raise awareness and literacy among young people.

The relationship between the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester and the Community Center at 105 Wildey Street in Tarrytown started in 2002 and is currently working its way through several problems areas including mutual financial arrangements. A final decision on whether the two organizations join will be made sometime during the year prior to a December ’08 deadline. The Community Center serves approximately 600 children from low-income families and provides a safe place to go after school with a number of key programs and athletic events open to the group.

Following Fixell’s reading, an awards ceremony took place featuring the organization’s older children. Also in attendance at the opening ceremony was Brian Skanes, Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Westchester.
