Despite what Punxsutawney Phil says, you can expect to see green leaves popping up all over our town in the next few weeks. The Sleepy Hollow Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce and the Tarrytown Environmental Advisory Council are cosponsoring Clean & Green, a plan to highlight businesses in our community acting to lessen any adverse impact on the environment.
You’ll recognize these businesses by the green leaf emblems they will be proudly displaying in their shops’ windows and doors. Like the five-star systems that honor great restaurants and hotels, Clean & Green businesses may receive one, two, or three Leaves.
The Clean & Green campaign emphasizes the benefits to merchants and the community of shopping locally, using environmentally sound methods and supplies, and reducing energy consumption. While most of us are aware of current global environmental concerns, we hear less about the impact that can be made closer to home. When a business purchases supplies locally, not only does the money stay in our community but, less energy is consumed in transportation.
