Thank You

Dear Editor:

We would like to thank you for taking such a vested interest in the education of the children of the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns.

Thank you for addressing the injustice of not granting tenure to Mrs. Gonzalez, Assistant Principal of the Washington Irving School.

As parents of children attending schools in this District, we have several questions that we have been pondering. What does it tell us as a community when our Board of Education does not recognize the many contributions of such an outstanding administrator? Does being named “The 2007 WCSMA Administrator of the Year” not count as being a reason to be granted tenure? Does being named “Bilingual Teacher of the Year” several years ago, not have value in the decision for tenure? Is data the sole factor we take into account in this district? Although data is very important, should we not be more “child driven" rather than just data driven?

We are losing both a wonderful Assistant Principal and Principal with no input from the parents, staff and especially the children in this community.
