SUMMARY:Old Croton Aqueduct in Art
DESCRIPTION:When Cornelia Cotton opened an art gallery in Croton in 1979\, one of the earliest gallery shows was called “Croton Water”– the first time that prints\, maps\, and ephemera of the Old Croton Aqueduct were shown as an art exhibit. Cornelia was active on efforts to preserve the Aqueduct early on\, and after the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct (FOCA) was founded she served on its board for many years. Her presentation will feature a wide variety of images of sites along the Aqueduct\, which ran from the Town of Yorktown to The Bronx\, crossed the High Bridge over the East River into Manhattan and continued to Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street at the site of the New York Public Library.  \nThursday\, September 10\, 7 p.m. at the Croton Free Library\, 171 Cleveland Drive\, Croton-on-Hudson\, NY. \nThis event is free.

SUMMARY:Hudson River Day @ the Croton Yacht Club
DESCRIPTION:The Croton Yacht Club is happy to announce its annual “Hudson River Day” celebration will be held on Saturday\, September 12th\, from 11 AM – 4 PM at the Croton Yacht Club located at 6 Elliott Way in Croton-on-Hudson.\n 	The mission of the event is to promote interest in the history and ecology of the river\, to cultivate future local environmental leaders and to promote\, enhance and protect river related recreational resources. There will be events and exhibits throughout the day targeting both children and adults\, focusing on the history and ecology of the river. Events and exhibits will include: a seining exhibition where local marine life will be captured\, displayed and later released; viewing tanks where local marine life can be identified and observed; hands-on exhibits for children such as toy sailboat making\, fossil making; sail boat rides\, and local artist displays and sales.\nFree sailboat rides\, will be offered by Ferry Sloops aboard their 22’ sloop-rigged Catboat the “Whimbrel” on a first come first served basis. The sails will depart at 11AM\, 12PM\, 1PM\, 2PM and 3PM. Guests can sign up at the Ferry Sloops table in the tent beginning at 10:00AM for any of the day’s scheduled sail times. Limit of 4 passengers per sail. Passenger age requirement: must be at least 12 years old\, under 18 years old must be accompanied by parent or adult guardian.\n There will also be a youth fishing clinic and contest sponsored by the Hudson River Fisherman’s Association and the Yacht Club. Volunteers will be present during the hours of 11:30 AM and 3:30 PM and provide the use of fishing equipment and bait\, free of charge. Fishing rod and reel combinations will also be awarded as prizes. All youths wishing to fish at the Yacht Club must be accompanied by an adult.\nThe Croton Yacht Club looks forward to coordinating this event because it provides the membership and local exhibitors the opportunity to share their river related knowledge and expertise with the community\, especially the children. The first film on their schedule is “Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World on September 16th at the Nyack Center (58 Depew Avenue\, Nyack). \nMary Oliver\, who died in 2019\, had an avid fan base\, including Oprah Winfrey\, Stephen Colbert\, and John Waters. She was a best-selling poet\, whose readers loved the spiritual and nature loving cast of her work. You could also say she was a poet for even those who don’t read poetry. \nDirector Sasha Waters rounds out biographical information\, beginning with Oliver’s difficult childhood and ending with her passing at age 83. Using archival footage\, photographs\, recording and new nature imagery shot in Provincetown\, where Oliver and her partner Molly Malone Cook lived for years\, to outline her story. The film’s strength lies in the conversations with its participants – including Steve Bucemi and John Waters – about what Oliver meant in both her writing and to the world. The difficulties that poets in America face in making a living and being taken seriously are also discussed. Oliver’s poetry worked on both formal and emotional levels. \nHudson Valley Poet H.E. Fisher will read some of her poetry after the film. The Community Partner for the evening is All Ways Writing. \nDoors to the Nyack Center open at 7:00pm\, and the film begins at 7:30pm.
