SUMMARY:Borscht Belt Artifacts: Relics of The Catskill Resort Age
DESCRIPTION:Culture\, cuisine\, and comedy came together to form an intricate network of hotels\, bungalow colonies\, and resorts throughout New York’s Catskill Mountains. With a strong Jewish lineage\, the Borscht Belt came to be known as a distinctly American story—one represented by a diverse clientele that journeyed to the mountains in search of fellowship\, basking under the warmth of the summer sun. Now\, with the remaining hotel structures vanishing one by one\, it is through these remaining artifacts\, such as matchbooks\, silverware\, menus\, and even architectural details\, that this story can be shared. The lecture employs these relics to share with visitors the complete and complicated story of the Borscht Belt—one that extends before the Civil War and reveals the many industries\, as well as individuals\, that made it successful. \nPresented live and in-person by Alex Prizgintas. \nA historian\, musician\, and lecturer who focuses on the neglected history of the Catskills and Hudson Valley region\, Alex Prizgintas serves as president of the Woodbury Historical Society in Orange County\, New York\, and has been published in the Hudson River Valley Review and the New York Archives Magazine. A preservationist\, Alex stewards the Richard L. Benjamin Collection of Borscht Belt Tourism History\, which contains hundreds of documents\, postcards\, and ephemera from the Borscht Belt era. Many of these items will be brought to the lecture for attendees to view live. \nFree and open to all.

SUMMARY:"Among Neighbors" Film Screening (Special Event Release Version)
DESCRIPTION:In a town where history has been silenced\, an eyewitness to murder speaks out in search of the boy she loved. \nCombining magical realism with traditional documentary techniques\, Among Neighbors examines the mystery of a small\, rural town in Poland where people of two different faiths lived side by side for centuries — until the killing began. The film reveals both love and betrayal as it zeroes in on a crime committed among neighbors: the murder of Holocaust survivors\, six months after the end of World War II. The chilling facts revealed in this documentary have led the office of Poland’s nationalist president to call for a ban on the film. \nThe Special Event Release includes 25 minutes of additional content in the form of a brief introduction by its award-winning filmmaker Yoav Potash\, and an in-depth post-film Q&A compilation filmed live at sold-out screenings that reveals the fascinating making-of stories––as well as the ongoing controversy––behind this critically-acclaimed film.

SUMMARY:Sprig of That at TCCC
DESCRIPTION:Tompkins Corners proudly presents Sprig of That\, a genre-bending trio of tabla\, fiddle\, and guitar that redefines what string music can be. Blending Northern European fiddle traditions\, modern American roots\, and the energy of the “indie classical” movement\, they create a sound that’s vibrant\, unexpected\, and alive. Inspired by innovators like Béla Fleck\, their music pulses with creativity and fearless exploration. \nWith an unconventional lineup and a striking musical chemistry\, Sprig of That delivers performances that are as dynamic as they are captivating. Producer Wes Corbett calls their sound “as surprising as it is gorgeous.” \nFormed in Minneapolis in 2018\, they’ve built a national following and collaborated with Carnegie Hall and Minnesota Public Radio to bring their inventive spirit to audiences and students across the country.

SUMMARY:God Bless America
DESCRIPTION:Attend a true colonial church service with costumed re-enactors and a period appropriate liturgy at a historic church that played a key role in the Revolutionary War.\nOld St Peter’s Church in Cortlandt Manor\, erected in 1767 is where General George Washington frequently worshipped when in the area. During the war\, the church was used as a field hospital by French General Rochambeau’s troops before and after the decisive battle at Yorktown\, Virginia. Eight French Revolutionary War soldiers are buried near the church. The site is recognized as part of the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historical Trail. In the surrounding cemetery are buried two men who played notable roles in Revolutionary War: Brigadier General Seth Pomeroy (a hero of Bunker Hill) and John Paulding\, one of the three captors of Major John Andre (the British spy involved with Benedict Arnold).
