SUMMARY:Eureka Day
DESCRIPTION:The Eureka Day School in Berkeley\, California\, is a bastion of progressive ideals: representation\, acceptance\, social justice. In weekly meetings Eureka Day’s five board members develop and update policy to preserve this culture of inclusivity\, reaching decisions only by consensus. But when a mumps outbreak threatens the Eureka community\, facts become subjective and every solution divisive\, leaving the school’s leadership to confront the central question of our time: How do you build consensus when no one can agree on truth?

SUMMARY:Open Studios
DESCRIPTION:Join us for open studios with our Artists in Residence: A.L. Steiner and William Lamson. Peek into their studios and chat with them about their practices. Light refreshments will be provided. \n https://www.kinosaito.org/current-resident-artists \nA.L. Steiner (b. 1967 in Miami\, Florida) is this year’s awardee from the Yale School of Art and KinoSaito Artist in Residence Partnership Program. Steiner utilizes constructions of photography\, video\, installation\, collage\, performance\, writing\, and curatorial work as seductive tropes channeled through the sensibility of a skeptical queer ecofeminist androgyne. \nWilliam Lamson is an interdisciplinary artist whose diverse practice involves working with elemental forces to create durational performative actions. Set in landscapes as varied as New York’s East River and Chile’s Atacama Desert\, his projects reveal the invisible systems and forces at play within these sites.

SUMMARY:Bonnie Katz Film Series - Tootsie at the Ossining Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Sydney Pollack’s Tootsie (1982) turns the gender swap comedy premise into social commentary. Dustin Hoffmann’s Michael Dorsey is only thinking of his own career when he disguises himself as a woman to audition for a part on a daytime soap opera\, but when the showrunners and the viewing public accept him in the persona of Dorothy Michaels\, he discovers that performing femininity is more than just a matter of clothing\, makeup\, and gesture. Locked into his adopted role by contractual obligations and the televised spotlight\, the contradictions of his private life and public persona build up alongside his surprising reputation as a pop-feminist figure. Co-starring Jessica Lange\, Bill Murray\, Teri Garr\, and Pollack himself\, Tootsie was equally embraced by real-life audiences and turned out to be a smash hit both critically and commercially. \nThe Bonnie Katz Film Series is an annual event honoring our Ossining Public Library colleague Bonnie Katz (1952-2021). A librarian and passionate film buff\, Bonnie had a positive spirit and outgoing personality\, and was a respected member of our profession and the Ossining community. This year the series will consist of screenings of three classic movies from the Hollywood studio era to the 1980s\, featuring some of Bonnie’s favorite actors and directors.

SUMMARY:Art For Purchase
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, The Rye Arts Center once again transforms Purchase Street in Downtown Rye into an open-air art experience. This year’s edition runs longer than ever before\, stretching from September 17th through October 29th\, with a special opening reception planned for the evening of the 17th. Residents and visitors alike are invited to experience art woven seamlessly into the fabric of everyday life\, all autumn long. This year’s event is thoughtfully timed to coincide with beloved local happenings—such as the annual October window painting— creating exceptionally vibrant opportunities to celebrate local creativity while amplifying visibility for both artists and local merchants. \nArt for Purchase is a public art project that reimagines storefronts as intimate stages for local and regional artists\, cultivating a rich dialogue between creativity\, commerce\, and community. As you browse shop windows or linger along the sidewalk\, you’ll discover unexpected moments of inspiration—artworks that spark reflection and delight amid the hum of daily routines. These works don’t just beautify; they invite conversation\, connection\, and a deeper appreciation for the role art\, and local artists\, play in shaping cultural identity and supporting local vitality. \nBy showcasing original art in the heart of Rye’s commercial district\, the initiative brings together artists\, business owners\, and the broader community in a shared celebration of creativity and local enterprise.
