SUMMARY:Kids Short Story Connection Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Creative Writing Thrives in Greenburgh! \nDoes your child love to read and write stories? Or do you know a child who does? September 19th is the kickoff date for the fall 2026 session of Saturday morning Kids Short Story Connection workshops. Thirty-three years ago\, the very first KSSC workshop was held in the Greenburgh Library with 10 kids between 9 and 12 years old. Today\, the Kids Short Story Connection meets at Greenburgh Town Hall (as well as over the Zoom platform). Young writers are assigned to workshops according to age and writing levels. This separation ensures that young writers meet in our round-table sessions with their creative-writing peers. All workshops are led by published authors/teachers. Each workshop has no more than 10 participants. This ensure that there is enough time for writing and sharing of work written during the workshop sessions. The two in-person workshops for kids between 9 and 14 meet at Greenburgh Town Hall on Saturday mornings from 10 am until 12 noon. The Advanced workshop for advanced writers 14 and over meets over the Zoom platform at the same time.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us at 2:00 p.m. on October 11 for an afternoon of new poetry from Kathy Fagan\, Erika Meitner\, and Elaine Sexton! (In-Person at HVWC) \nBios: \nKathy Fagan’s newest collection is The Unbecoming (W.W. Norton\, September 2026). Her sixth book\, winner of PSA’s William Carlos Williams Poetry Prize\, is Bad Hobby (Milkweed Editions\, 2022)\, available in print and audio. Sycamore (Milkweed\, 2017) was a finalist for the 2018 Kingsley Tufts Award. A 2023 Guggenheim Fellow\, she is Professor Emerita of The Ohio State University\, where she co-founded and directed the MFA Program in Creative Writing. \nErika Meitner is the author of six books of poems\, including Ideal Cities (Harper Perennial\, 2010)—a 2009 National Poetry Series winner; Holy Moly Carry Me (BOA Editions\, 2018)\, winner of the 2018 National Jewish Book Award and a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award in poetry; and Useful Junk (BOA Editions\, 2022). Her poems have been published most recently in The New Yorker\, Electric Literature\, Virginia Quarterly Review\, Oxford American\, The New Republic\, Orion\, and elsewhere. Her seventh book\, Assembled Audience\, is due out from Milkweed Editions in September 2026. Meitner is currently a professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, where she also directs the Creative Writing Program. \n Elaine Sexton is a poet\, critic\, bookmaker\, educator\, and librettist.  She is the author of the forthcoming opera\, The Post Office\, written in collaboration with composer Laura Kaminsky\, premiering in the spring (2026) at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Spruce Peak Arts. This chamber opera in poems will also appear in book form with Grid Books (May\, 2026).  Her most recent collection of poetry is Site Specific: New & Selected Poems (Grid\, 2025). Her four previous books of poetry are: Sleuth (New Issues\, 2003)\, Causeway (New Issues\, 2008)\, and Prospect/Refuge (Sheep Meadow Press\, 2015)\, and Drive (Grid Books\, 2022).

SUMMARY:The Life & Times of Theodore Cornu
DESCRIPTION:Theodore Cornu (1884-1985) was an artist\, canoe builder\, and environmental pioneer who inspired Pete Seeger and many others in the early environmental movement—but died in obscurity. He lived for twenty-five years in the Ferry House of the Van Cortlandt Manor. There he built Native American-style canoes—one as long as forty feet—and devoted himself to the conservation of the Hudson River. In 1936 he was one of the founders of the Hudson River Conservation Society. Croton Point Nature Center Assistant Curator Jean Klurfeld will present her research on Cornu’s life and impact\, based archival research and newly uncovered information about his life. \nThursday\, October 8\, 7 p.m. at the Croton Free Library\, 171 Cleveland Drive\, Croton-on-Hudson\, NY. \nThis event is free.
