SUMMARY:Lecture: George vs. Guy: The Fate of the Black Loyalists
DESCRIPTION:When the Preliminary Articles of Peace were signed in November of 1782\, they included a clause – inserted by the American delegation – that prevented the British from carrying off any property – “including negroes” – as they evacuated from the colonies. But the British had already promised thousands of people of African descent freedom through Dunmore’s Proclamation and the Philipsburg Proclamation. What would happen to the Black Loyalists? Learn how General George Washington pursued every avenue to prevent the Black Loyalists from leaving\, and how and why British General Sir Guy Carleton let them. \nThis hybrid program\, available in-person at Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site (29 Warburton Ave. Yonkers\, NY) and online is free and available to everyone courtesy the Friends of Philipse Manor Hall. To register for in-person\, call 914-965-4027 or email philipsemanorhall@parks.ny.gov.

SUMMARY:RIVERTOWN FILM SCREENING: THE CHRISTOPHERS
DESCRIPTION:58 Depew Avenue Nyack\, NY 1096\n(845) 353-2568 \nContact: Patricia Schneider/Publicist\n(917) 612-2675 \nThe Uneasy Co-Existence of Art and Money are Highlighted in\n“The Christophers” \nMay 2026 – Artists – and today’s art world – are focused on making money. \nWhile that statement may seem contrary to the (now antiquated) notion of the artist toiling away in their bare bones studio\, it’s the theme at the heart of “The Christophers”\, which Rivertown Film is presenting at the Nyack Center (South Broadway at Depew Ave.\, entrance on South Broadway) on Wednesday\, June 10th. \nJulian is a once famous painter whose time has passed. Where at one point he mingled with the rich and famous\, he is now\, in his twilight years\, reduced to earning his income by recording Cameos. He dislikes his son and daughter\, who are both anxious to put a windfall in place for when their father passes on. And hence their scheme is born. Sallie\, Julian’s daughter\, recruits Lori\, an art school friend\, to get hired as her father’s assistant. Sallie instructs Lori to “forge” a series of “The Christophers”\, the paintings that won Julian his fame. The originals have fetched millions at auction. And this “undiscovered” series that Lori will paint- discovered after Julian’s death – will surely be worth the same. Desperate for money\, Lori reluctantly accepts the gig. \nWhat follows is a partnership between two true artists who challenge each other’s notions about creativity and originality. Julian’s later years have been filled with what he considers “selling out”. Lori’s generation of artists only know a world in which selling out is a given. The art world works very differently now than it did in Julian’s heyday. But while money may now be the force that pushes the paintbrush around a canvas\, this film’s narrative says that anyone can make money – and that only a real artist can make art. \nThere will be a post-screening discussion with Daly Flanagan\, Executive Director of The Rockland Center for the Arts\, who are also the Community Partner. \nDoors to the Nyack Center open at 7:30pm\, and the film begins at 8pm.\nTickets are $13/General Admission\, $11/Students & Seniors\, and $9/Rivertown Film Members More information can be found at rivertownfilm.org.\nRivertown Film is a non-profit organization which was founded in 2001. Their mission is devoted to celebrating\, exploring and promoting the art of the motion picture through film screenings and educational programs. The organization is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts and with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature\, and our corporate sponsors are Elena Schloss\, Happy Dwellings with Elena/ Julia B.
