The Adult Education Committees of Temple Beth Abraham and Woodland’s Community Temple present Henry Sapoznik: Jews and Jazz

December 7, 2022 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Free

When we think of “Jews and jazz’, we think of American icons like Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw, but what about an earlier generation of European-born Jewish musicians who upon arriving in America, were obliged to learn two new languages: English and jazz? Henry Sapoznik examines through klezmorim recordings, how that first generation took to jazz as both a social and musical gateway to speed up their acculturation in transition from old world to new.
Henry Sapoznik is an award-winning producer, musicologist, performer, and writer in the fields of traditional and popular Yiddish and American music and culture. He is a five-time Grammy nominated producer, having reissued over 30 anthologies of Yiddish, jazz, old time music, ragtime, blues, bluegrass, swing, klezmer and cantorial 78s and cylinders.
Please register to attend.
