Phelps Hospital’s Inaugural World Sickle Cell Day Event – Wed., June 12

June 12 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Free

Phelps Hospital will celebrate the Inaugural World Sickle Cell Day on Wednesday, June 12, from 5:30-6:30pm at the Phelps Hospital Auditorium – 701 N. Broadway, Sleepy Hollow, NY.

Delve into the latest advancements in treatment and research with renowned experts Dr. Banu Aygun and Dr. Cheryl Mensah. From groundbreaking discussions on gene therapy to insights into managing sickle cell and thalassemia, this event promises to inspire, educate, and empower.

Hear firsthand experience from Dr. Mensah’s dedicated patients, including one who travels monthly from the Bronx and another from Westchester, as they share their personal journeys and advocacy efforts.

Dr. Mensah is new to the Northwell Health system. With the arrival of Dr. Mensah, all of these treatments are now available for adult sickle cell patients at Phelps Memorial and Northern Westchester. There is a shortage of sickle cell providers in the United States. A 2016 survey found that only 7% of Medicaid and 43% of commercially insured sickle cell patients saw a hematologist in the last year. Within Westchester County, there are few dedicated adult hematologists who treat adults with sickle cell disease.

The event aims to raise awareness about sickle cell disease, a serious blood disorder affecting patients of all backgrounds, and the cutting-edge treatments that are now available.
