In celebration of Women’s History Month and the important priority that the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) places upon women in the sciences, OIST and the OIST Foundation, in partnership with the Japan Center for International Exchange/USA, the Atlantic Council South Asia Center, and the Japanese Women’s Leadership Initiative (JWLI), is hosting a webinar focused on two dynamic young women: Afshan Jamshaid and Nina Harano. Both are students in the sciences, Afshan at OIST in Okinawa and Nina at Columbia University in New York City. Afshan grew up in a town in Pakistan where women’s educational opportunities were severely limited and Nina grew up in Okinawa where far fewer students continue on to higher education than in other parts of Japan. Both have overcome these challenges to becomes successful science students and next generation science leaders.Moderated by Dr. Sheila A. Smith, Senior Fellow in Japan Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, this webinar will highlight the stories of these two amazing women.
