Healthy Life Series Continues in June at Phelps Hospital

Phelps Hospital’s Healthy Life series offers the community a wide range of programs on health-related subjects as well as numerous health screenings and support groups. All events are free and take place on the Phelps campus, 701 N. Broadway in Sleepy Hollow unless otherwise noted. The Phelps Healthy Life Calendar for June is as follows:
Saturday, June 1 – Totsaver Program This 3-hour class includes the pediatric component of the American Heart Association CPR for Family and Friends. Due to the physical demands of the class, pregnant women in their third trimester may wish to consult their physician for advice on participation. A CPR handbook is mailed out upon registration.1st Saturday of each month, 9 am – 12 pm in the Hoch Center for Emergency Education, 755 North Broadway, Suite 200. $55 per person. Tuesday, June 4 – Elder Law Series: Don’t Fear the Tax Man…Tax Considerations for Estate and Elder Law Planning The program is designed to help people understand the tax consequences of estate and asset protection techniques. A discussion of estate, gift and income tax laws will be held, as they relate to both estate and Medicaid qualification planning strategies. 6:00-7:30pm in the Auditorium. Wednesday, June 5 – Mind Games 1st Wednesday of the month Mind Games is a fun way for seniors to stimulate various cognitive functions memory, problem-solving, and focus. If you are having trouble remembering things or feel that you are easily confused, come join the fun! 2:00 – 3:30pm in the Boardroom/”C” level. Tuesday, June 11 – This Night’s For You: Celebrating Women’s Health A panel of experts will discuss well-being for women, holistic cardiac care and breast health. Participants will choose of two interactive sessions: Hands-Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training, HOlistic modalities experience, Nutrition demonstration by Pace University’s Nutrition Program. Health refreshments and a light dinner will be served. All attendees will be entered into a raffle to win a gift basket. Admission is $20, registration required. Thursday, June 13 – Breakfast Club (Cardiology) designed especially for seniors, includes a free breakfast, a presentation on a healthy lifestyle topic and a light exercise program to improve strength and balance. Thursday, June 13 – Osteoporosis Program With Dr. Narwal Osteoporosis Education and Support Program is for people concerned about bone loss and fractures. Physicians, therapists and dietitians meet to discuss risk factors, causes, proper body mechanics and medication options. The sessions are held from 10:30 am to 11:30 am the second Thursday of the month in the Phelps Boardroom (C Level). Closest parking is near the Auditorium entrance. Friday, June 14 – Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group Alzheimer’s disease is life changing for both those who are diagnosed and those close to them. Thursday, June 18 – Senior Steps Senior Steps is a program offering health screenings. Once a month, seniors can attend one of the following screenings: blood pressure and pulse oximetry, balance, cognition, low vision, voice, swallowing, and hearing or attend a program such as nutrition education and medication reconciliation with a pharmacist. ABCs of Baby Care – This class for expectant parents is to help you prepare for your new baby’s arrival. Topics covered included how to diaper and bathe a baby, equipment needed such as a car seat, crib safety, guidelines for safe sleep, newborn characteristics and appearance, general baby care and more. This class is offered once a month. Classes are held at 7 pm. Please see registration form for details. $50 per couple. Prenatal Breastfeeding Class – This class for expectant parents offers information on how to initiate successful breastfeeding. Topics include milk supply and how milk is made, what to expect from your newborn, latch and positioning, how to tell if your baby is getting enough milk and more. Couples are encouraged to come together. Taught by International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC). $50 per couple. Cancellation policy: Full refund for cancellations requested at least 1 week prior to the start of class; 50% refund after that date. This class is offered Saturdays, 10 am – 2 pm once a month.
