Meeting ID: 188 971 049

The Contemplative Studies Minor at Purchase College, SUNY; The Aligned Center; and the Purchase College SUNY Wellness Center welcome Rev. Konrad Ryushin Marchaj, Sensei, to explore Ecstasy and the Ordinary Mind: Meditation and the Exploration of Consciousness.

In this lecture, Zen priest Ryushin Marchaj will compare the pursuit of exotic and seductive altered states of consciousness to the more mundane but rigorous commitment to a disciplined spiritual practice. Starting with meditation—the study of the nature of our awareness – this lecture will offer guidelines for how to choose, moment to moment, wakefulness and full creative engagement with our messy lives over our habitual patterns of sleepwalking through our days, clouded by delusion.

Ryushin Marchaj

Rev. Konrad Ryushin Marchaj, Sensei is a Zen priest in the Mountains and Rivers Order of Zen Buddhism, and a Dharma heir of the late John Daido Loori, Roshi. Ryushin Sensei was the Abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Born in Warsaw, Poland, he immigrated to the United States in 1967. Before entering the Monastery, he loved competitive sailing and rock and mountain climbing. He has been practicing Buddhism since 1983. Drawing on his background as a physician and psychiatrist, Ryushin’s infectious interest and thorough training in the workings of the mind, combined with his skill at translating complex concepts into the accessible, everyday language, characterize his unique teaching style.

Presented by the Contemplative Studies Minor at Purchase College, SUNY.
