DECAMERON 20:20 Broadcast Premiere
October 1 @ 8:00 am - October 12 @ 5:00 pm$15 – $20
Zorongo Flamenco Dance Theatre presents “Decameron 20:20.” Inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio’s classic, “The Decameron” (1349), which follows ten people in isolation during the Black Plague in Florence, Italy. Each individual wrote a story a day, inspired by their interpretation of the state of the pandemic.
Fast forward to 2020, where society is going through a similar circumstance. Zorongo Artistic Director/Founder, Susana di Palma, conceptualized the idea of creating a modern Decameron during COVID-19; where she invited eight flamenco artists from around the world, including herself, to follow in Boccaccio’s footsteps and create daily works of art that express their array of emotions while in isolation.
It began with composer-guitarist Jose Luis de la Paz, who created new music for each of the 10 days. Each day, de la Paz would present a two-minute composition to the eight dancers and videographer, and the dancers would have 24-hours to create a new dance based on their interpretation of the music. At the end of each day, the eight performers would come together to discuss their interpretation of the music. Once their dance was completed, they would send their work to Technical Director, Jim Peitzman, where he compiled the 80 short performances into a 20 minute and 20-second masterpiece, hence the aptly named “Decameron 20:20.”
Performers include: Susana di Palma (Minneapolis, MN), Belén Maya (Seville, Spain), Isaac Tovar (Seville, Spain), Jeanne d’Arc Casas (Madrid, Spain), Emilio Ochando (Madrid, Spain), Rebecca Thomas (New York, New York), Jesús Muñoz(Albuquerque, NM), Fanny Ara (Oakland, CA) and Jose Luis de la Paz (Miami, Florida).
