May 4 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm$15 – $25
Charis Chamber Voices will present a wide-ranging program, including Arvo Pärt’s modernist take on chant, a Mass by the German romantic Josef Rheinberger, and the world premiere of a new work by local composer Michael Minard on Saturday, May 4, at 7:30 p.m. at Irvington Presbyterian Church, 25 North Broadway, Irvington, NY.
Charis is an auditioned chorus of about 40 men and women from Westchester County, NY, and Fairfield County, CT. Founded in 1994, the group is renowned for its diverse repertoire, unique blend of voices and captivating performances. This is Charis’ tenth season under the direction of Art Sjogren, an accomplished choral director who is frequently in demand as a guest conductor at American and international choral festivals.
The program opens with three pieces by the Estonian Pärt, including his Solfedzo, a haunting rendition of the singing scale do-re-mi. Three liturgical works by Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) follow, including his gently beautiful Locust iste. Three songs from the Drei Quartette, Op. 31 of Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) complete the first half of the program. The second half opens with the Mass in E flat major by Rheinberger (1839-1901), followed by Minard’s work, Pied Beauty, which is a choral setting of a poem by the 19th century British poet Gerard Manley Hopkins. Minard, a resident of Katonah, NY, is Charis’ composer-in-residence.
The concerts will be followed by a reception to meet and greet the choir.
Tickets are $25 ($20 for seniors and $15 for students). They may be purchased in advance through the Charis website, www.charisvocals.com, or at the door.
