Can American Christianity Finally Outgrow Racism?
June 16 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pmFree
Join us via Zoom on Wednesday, June 16th, when REPAIR gathers to hear from Dr. Robert P. Jones and to discuss the possibility of true racial reform for American Christianity. The event is free and open to all.
Robert P. Jones founded and leads the Public Religion Research Institute, a polling firm focused on the intersection of politics and religion. His 2016 book The End of White Christian America explored the future of American churches in an increasingly diverse nation.
Now he is offering an even more provocative challenge to America Christianity. The title of his newest book is drawn from these lines of James Baldwin: “I will flatly say that the bulk of this country’s white population impresses me, and has so impressed me for a very long time, as being beyond any conceivable hope of moral rehabilitation. They have been white, if I may so put it, too long.”
In White Too Long, Jones makes a powerful case that Baldwin was right—and that the time for our churches to pursue moral rehabilitation is long overdue. He describes the way Christian churches in the U.S. have been historically bound up with white supremacy, offering examples not just from the Baptist South but from mainline Protestant and Catholic churches in the North. He also draws on the latest research to show that, even today, being a white member of a Christian church is statistically correlated with holding racially biased views.
In an increasingly diverse America, race continues to divide us because of unconscious bias, willful blindness, deeply ingrained systems of oppression, and the burdens of history we have yet to address. Rivertowns Episcopal Parishes Action on Inclusion and Race (REPAIR) is a community of Westchester citizens determined to play our part in bringing healing and justice to our society . . . starting with the local Episcopal churches in which many of us worship.
