Weekend Events in Westchester County Parks

The weekend of May 14 & 15, will bring with it a host of varied events spread out across a variety of Westchester county parks in Rye, Somers, Cross River, Croton-on-Hudson and Mount Kisco. Read on for the full listing of events:

 

SATURDAY, MAY 14

Marshlands Conservancy, Route 1 (Boston Post Road), Rye – (914) 835-4466

Spring Warbler Migration – 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

Bring binoculars to seek out these quick-moving birds.

Volunteer Work Project – 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Bring work gloves and help inspect Osprey Island. Hand tools provided.

 

Muscoot Farm, Route 100, Somers – (914) 864-7282

Morning Farm Chores — 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Think you have what it takes to be a farmer? Help the staff care for the farm animals. Pre-registration and fee required.

 

Read Wildlife Sanctuary, Playland Park, Rye – (914) 957-8720

Volunteer Work Corps Day – 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Help out with invasive plant removal, beach clean up, trail work and more.

 

Trailside Nature Museum at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, Routes 35 & 121 South, Cross River – (914) 864-7322

Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! – 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Catch, observe and learn about some of the many insects that live in and around the reservation.

 

Muscoot Farm, Route 100, Somers – (914) 864-7282

Frogs at Night – 7 p.m. – 9 p.m.

A night hike through the farm to listen to these creatures that play an important role at the farm.

 

SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, MAY 14 & 15

May Days at Playland – Noon – 7 p.m.

$15 rides all day.

 

SUNDAY, MAY 15

Croton Point Nature Center, Croton Point Avenue, Croton-on-Hudson – (914) 864-5297

Archaeology Open House – 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

A presentation about Hunter Brook Rock Shelter, an important local pre-historic site, by the New York State Archaeological Association.

 

Merestead Estate, Byram Lake Road, Mount Kisco – (914) 231-4500

Historic Mansion Tour – 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

A curator-led tour of Westchester’s Downton Abbey to hear stories about who lived there and why they were important.  Pre-registration required at (914) 447-7497. Donation suggested.

 

Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial, Route 35, Somers – (914) 864-7268

Walking Tour of the Spring Gardens – 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Join the horticulturist to see what’s in bloom. Free; pre-registration required.

Spring Wildflower Discovery Walk – 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Enjoy the beauty of the common and not-so-common wildflowers at the preserve.
